New YMCA Hostel & Community Facilities, Birkenhead

The new hostel accommodation and community facilities for Birkenhead YMCA incorporate 56 en-suite bedrooms, conference suite, IT training suite, cyber café and support offices.

The residential and community spaces are designed so that they can operate independently, although both share a common reception area connecting the two blocks.  A south facing courtyard at the rear provides essential secure external space for the residents.

The BREEAM Very Good rated building was completed at a cost of £4.6 million and was officially opened on 21 September 2007 by HRH The Duke of Kent.  The Chief Executive of Birkenhead YMCA, Anne Johnson said:

"We sought from the outset with our developing partners to achieve a building that would embrace and provide an immediate uplifting experience to those who, for a variety of reasons, have fallen prey to homelessness.  This building has not only achieved that in every aspect, nook and cranny, but has provided the signature for regeneration in a part of Birkenhead that has been devoid of economic investment for some considerable years."
