Urban Regeneration, Hulme, Manchester
for the Guinness Trust |
|
Phase one of Manchester’s Hulme redevelopment was designed by Ainsley Gommon Architects for the Guinness Trust.
The 165 no. dwellings were designed in full participation with the residents using 'Design for Real' open days and weekly design meetings.
The surrounding buildings comprise a mix ranging from tower blocks to single storey sheds, and the site layout is constrained by a complex web of underground services.
High space standards were achieved and the flats have individual private balconies overlooking streets and squares.
The project won the RIBA 1995 Regional Housing Design Award for ‘excellence in housing design’.
