green design

Buildings have a significant impact on the environment resulting from the emissions of gases contributing to global warming and acid rain.  These emissions arise from the construction process, material choices and from the burning of fuel when the building is in use, affecting the world's ecology, climate and resources.

The challenge of improving the thermal performance of buildings and reducing their environmental impact requires that clients are encouraged to involve themselves in important strategic decisions, and as design professionals we believe it is our role to enable this.   Ainsley Gommon Architects recognise that the planning and design of the built environment has a significant impact on resource use and pollution both at global and local scales and is therefore a critical element in moving towards a sustainable future.  In the cycle of a building, from concept design, construction, use and maintenance, to demolition, it is in the design stage that the concept of sustainability can most effectively applied.
We promote best practice in energy efficient design by using an integrated approach that embraces siting, orientation, built form, building fabric, services, landscape and sustainable assessment methods including the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM.  Our in-house Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor and On Construction Domestic Energy Assessor offer specialist services and knowledge and promote an integrated design process.  Our ‘Fabric First’ approach to energy efficiency is to firstly reduce energy demand, using a well insulated, low air-leakage envelope and passive systems, followed by using energy efficient building services, before considering appropriate renewable energy technologies.
